The videos this week were very informative. These videos
gave you a lot of information in a short amount of time. The first video on
cheating was very informative. There were a few areas that were a little
unclear. The metadata that is in a word document is a very interesting topic.
The directions on how to protect some of your information were not very clear.
I followed the directions to see what data goes with my word document and I
could not find the statistics. This point may have been unclear to me because I
did not have any idea that this type of information is there. So I think there
should have been some more specifics on meta data and ways to protect yourself.
The second video also gave a lot of information about the
copyright laws. The main point that resonated with me was the educational use
law. I knew a little bit about the law, but I want to know more specifics. This
is another topic that is very relevant to my career and I am interested in it.
I think the entire slide show could have just been about that.
These points are unclear in the field of education because
people are not aware that their personal information is attached to a word
document. This is not common knowledge, because you cannot see the metadata.
Also the educational copyright law is not taught at schools during professional
development. This is an area that teachers should be aware of because not
everyone goes through education courses where they could have received this
information.
HI Sherry,
ReplyDeleteYes, it's quite a complex topic! Here is a great free resource for use with students and parents about being safe online and all things related to copyright. Have fun!

Let me know what you think!
Hi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I did not know so much information traveled with my Word documents. I still don't know how to change what goes and what doesn't.
The copyright issues are very relevant to teachers, and we don't know enough about them, it seems. I agree that this is something that should be emphasized and taught every year during professional development.
I definately agree with your concern about metadata. I personally had no idea that when I copied information I generated in Word that it could be traced. I also was unclear as to the procedure to remove this trail from data I create. I do however see how it could be a valuable piece of information if a student is accused of cheating. I also agree that copyright law should be taught to teachers in professional development, and maybe even to the students as they become less aware of these alws, and the data becomes more & more available to use.
